New Approaches to the Cultivation of Human Breast Carcinomas

  • Chapter
Human Tumor Cells in Vitro

Abstract

Despite many attempts, the cultivation of human breast tumors still remains a challenging problem. Attention to these neoplasms has increased since the discovery of a virus-like particle morphologically comparable to the mouse mammary tumor virus (MTV) in the milk of patients with a history of breast cancer (Moore et al., 1969, 1971). The mouse mammary tumor virus discovered by Bittner (1936) reproduces exclusively in epithelial cells and induces tumors in the mammary gland only (Lasfargues and Moore, 1966). If a comparable mechanism is valid for human breast tumors, a similar virus might be produced by the epithelial cells derived from these carcinomas, hence the sudden interest in their cultivation and the mounting awareness of the difficulties involved.
