Parametric Decay Processes and Heating in a Bounded Magnetized Plasma

Abstract

Parametric interactions are studied on the present plas­ma set-up characterized by the presence of many normal modes, previously investigated in a small-signal study. Two types of resonant parametric instabilities have been simultaneously observed above a certain threshold of the pump power at frequeicy fp (fLH< fp << fpe). In both processes the electron decay product is a Trivelpiece-Gould (TG) mode. In the first type the ion decayis an ion-acoustic (IA) wave (f < fci) and electron and ion heating are observed. In the second type the ion decay mode is an ion-cyclo‑tron (IC) wave (fci < f < fpi) the spectral width of which is muchlarger than that of the IA spectrum and it is only accompanied by electron heating. All decay modes have been identified after care­ful comparison. with the results of the study of the linear wave resonances of the system. Enhanced diffusion is furthermore observed.
