Abstract

The first students of American Indian languages were missionaries. They were sent to the New World by the monarchs of Spain to propagate the Faith. Administrative and military personnel of the same monarchs relied upon the priests to facilitate operations which involved taxation and slavery, and when colonial avarice was opposed by clerical charity friction resulted, friction which in the case of the Jesuits led to their expulsion late in the eighteenth century.
