Abstract
Data from numerous maps have been consolidated for the maps in the present volume. The major contributions, however, have been those of Swanton for North America and the wall map of Loukotka for South America. It is hoped that the maps in the present volume will be found useful in spite of the deficiencies which plague attempts to include a great range of data in a relatively limited space. It has not been possible to put every single name of the map prepared for Loukotka’s linguistic classification onto our South American maps, partly because abbreviations are used on Loukotka’s map and names are spelled out on ours. For greater detail, the reader will have to consult Loukotka’s map and maps available with articles in learned journals. (Loukotka’s map is available with his classification from the Latin American Studies Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, or in unfolded form from the Association of American Geographers, 1146 Sixteenth St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036.)
