Abstract
A review of the theoretical and experimental aspects of interactions of phonons with recoilless (Mössbauer) gamma rays is given. Applications of the sideband pattern generated when either source or absorber is excited by ultrasound are made to the calibration of Conventional-velocity drives and to construction of a variable-frequency ultrasonic drive. The acoustic intensity dependence of the unshifted line is shown to be a convenient tool for measuring f fractions, especially in thick sources, where the resonant self-absorption may be totally eliminated. Mention is made of the possible uses of the Mössbauer effect as a probe for purely acoustic experiments, particularly at very high frequencies.
