Remarks on Effects of Large Orbital Degeneracy and on Transport Properties of Mixed Valent Systems

Abstract

I discuss here the many ways in which large orbital degeneracy, N (of one of the two relevant ionic configurations) plays a role in the mixed valence and Kondo problems. Some unusual transport properties of mixed valent systems are then described, namely the large electrical resistivity of mixed valent metals, their anomalous temperature dependent Hall coefficient, and the giant negative magnetoresistance of SmS and TmSe. Explanations are proposed for these effects.
