Inhomogeneous Mixed Valency: Paramagnetic Dimers

Abstract

We shall review the evidence for what is apparently a new magnetic species: ordered magnetic dimers intrinsic to a crystalline lattice. The dimers have been detected in a class of inhomogeneous, mixed-valence compounds known as the Magnéli titanium oxides.
