A Non-Equilibrium Theory for Phase Transitions and the Expanding Universe

  • Hiroomi Umezawa

Abstract

This paper presents a very brief sketch of three topics concerning thermo field dynamics (TFD), a quantum field theory with thermal degrees of freedom. The basic formalism of non-equilibrium TFD will be presented and then its application to a study of the growth of an ordered state (a state of broken symmetry) through the course of non-equilibrium thermal transition from a non-ordered state (i.e. a symmetric state) will be discussed. Lastly the application to a study of non-equilibrium expansion of a system such as the universe will be touched upon. Although further analysis is needed to obtain many physical results within these applications, these studies clarify several aspects of non-equilibrium TFD, which is in the early stage of its development. Summarizing, the purpose of this paper is to present the basic structure of non-equilibrium TFD by presenting its construction and its applications.
