Applications of Hall Effect Devices in Space Technology
Hall effect devices have found important applications in space technology. Artificial magnetic hysteresis damping of the attitude motion of the DODGE and RAE-A satellites was achieved with Hall effect devices. They are used to measure the magnet strength in the trim magnet systems for NIMBUS, LANDSAT, SAS-A, and SAS-B satellites. They are used to provide commutation of DC power for brush-less DC motors for SATCOM, DMSP, and the Atmosphere Explorer satellites. The drag-free sensing system (called DISCOS) for the NOVA satellites requires a very slender magnet for damping proof-mass motions. The uniformity of magnetization of this magnet is critical. A Hall effect detector was used to measure the magnet strength and confirm the required uniformity on the magnets for flight.
