Biodisposition and Histological Evaluation of Topically Applied Retinoic Acid in Liposomal, Cream and Gel Dosage Forms
In search for improved dermatological products attempts are being made to design new vehicles or utilize drug carriers to optimize topical therapy. Several reports have indicated that the liposomal form provided higher drug (triamcinolone, progesterone, econazole, minoxidil and local anesthetics) concentration in the skin but similar or lower concentrations in the internal organs, than the conventional dosage forms, i.e., ointment, cream, gel or lotion (3–5). Biocompatibility studies indicated that liposomes are non-toxic and are safe vehicles (2). Topical retinoids have an increasing role in topical therapy. The existing products have many disadvantages, e.g. high degree of irritation and the chance of systemic absorption which may lead to serious side-effects. The objective of the present study was to develop a liposomal retinoid product and to evaluate the in vivo biodisposition and histological effects of retinoic acid applied topically in liposomal, gel and cream form on guinea pig skin.
