A Microcomputer-Aided Interactive Process Planning and Estimation System for Use in a Jobbing Foundry

Summary

This paper outlines a microcomputer-based interactive process planning and estimating system for use in a jobbing foundry producing either or both ferrous and non-ferrous castings. It is concerned mainly with estimation of casting, core-making and moulding weight, various production parameters (e.g. metal/mould ratio, mould box size, yield ratio) manufacturing time and cost. The system has been organized in modular format, of which there are seven, and contains 25 options for main shape elements. A feedback loop has been incorporated into the system to improve the accuracy of weight, time and cost estimation. Preliminary results indicate that the system will reduce the skill and time required in estimation and planning and will produce a more accurate and consistent methods sheet. The use of the system is described by an example of a typical casting from concept through modelling to final estimate.
