JIT with Symphony

Manufacturing systems is an optional course in the MSc in Management Sciences at Hull University. The concepts in manufacturing planning and control systems, particularly material requirements planning (MRP) and just-in-time (JIT) systems, are not complex analytically but it is difficult to convey to students the impact on inventory of co-ordinated planning and control systems for ‘complex’ products. The integrated software package Symphony has been used to construct MRP records and simulate flows of material. Students are able to experiment with changes to parameters, such as lot sizes, and see the effects of uncertainty in the system, e.g. the master production schedule.
