Feasibility Study into Use of Laser Scanning Measuring Device and Robot as Flexible Inspection Station
Many of today’s flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) contain fully integrated ‘contact probing’ inspection devices. In the small batch manufacturing environment, such devices have been found to be expensive, requiring long set-up times and large amounts of manual input. This paper evaluates a flexible non-contact inspection station which has been put together by using proprietary machines, i.e. a Unimate PUMA 560 Mk2 robot, an Addison Lasermike Type 8050 laser micrometer and an Apple II microcomputer. The cell has been used to inspect the external dimension of turned components. The feasibility of the inspection station is fully discussed and attention is drawn particularly to the factors which affect its integrity.
