The Surface Topography Produced by Deep Drilling Operations
This paper defines the surface topography produced by deep drilling processes and shows that a novel surface form exists which consists of a regular series of plateaux separated by deep valleys. The spacing between the valleys corresponds to the feed rate and the valley depth is proportional to the feed rate. Plateau-honed surfaces have a similar topography and the usefulness of deep drilled surfaces with respect to bearing performance is demonstrated. The paper finishes by considering the use of surface integrity data sets to define the complete topography of a deep drilled surface.
