Abstract

Many factors contribute to the undesirable diet of the elderly. The social factors are of special interest because they are likely to differ with culture. In the West, the nutritional status of elderlies is affected particularly by social isolation low motivation to prepare meals, and income1. In contrast, the seniors in societies with strong family ties are respected can cared for and their eco-comic situation is of less importance2. In the Western society many nutrition programs have been introduced3, but not many of them were designed on research of the target population. Also the effectiveness of the programs is rarely evaluated. Therefore we have attempted to develop a methodology which would provide a data base for a specific nutrition program development and its evaluation. The method includes criteria to assess the presonality profile of elderlies, their food use and food selection determinantes. The data were collected in the fall and winter, 1977.
