Abstract

With the increasing prevalence of overweight in the technologically advanced countries has come a preoccupation with weight-control programs, and great amounts of money are being expended by obese patients to try to attain the magic goal of “desirable” body weight. In recent years, however, there has been considerable controversy about the actual effect of obesity on health and therefore about the necessity of preventive measures.
