Relationship of Events at the Lymphocyte Cell Surface to Gene Expression: Approaches to the Problem
One of the central issues in biology is to understand how events at cell surfaces alter gene expression. Some examples of this in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells are (1) transfer of sex factor in bacteria; (2) effects of colicins in bacteria; (3) contact inhibition; (4) fertilization of the egg; (5) effects of certain hormones; and (6) induction of an immune response. Although these examples seem diverse, the questions to be approached are similar. It is essential to understand the nature of surface receptors, how the “linkage” between the surface and cellular genes occurs, and what ultimate alterations in macromolecular synthesis follow an event at the cell’s surface.
