Formulations using surfactants, particularly mixtures of surfactants, have been devised by trial and error, and theory has followed to explain the observed results. The application of theory will not lead to quick, easy solutions of practical problems. However there is a need to have a grasp of theory for a better understanding of the mode of action of a surfactant. This helps in the more rapid and efficient selection of the correct surfactant, and possibly other components.
