Abstract
Geosynclinal development has been envisioned as a complicated and manystage process similar to that of the transformation of oceanic-type crust into continental crust (Peive, 1969; Peive et al., 1971, 1972) and takes place both in primary and in secondary or regenerated eugeosynclines. Three main stages of eugeosynclinal development—oceanic, transitional, and continental—are recognized by their characteristic sets of magmatic and sedimentary formations. The oceanic stage is often, but not always, preceded by graben formation (Dewey and Bird, 1971). The grabens appear when geosynclines are formed in rift zones evolving within preexisting continental crust. Graben-stage rock complexes include mottled shallow-water conglomerates of arkosic composition and trachybasaltic, trachyandesitic, rhyolitic, and dacitic lavas and tuffs. They are sometimes associated with tholeiitic basalts and diabases. Together they clearly point to the processes of crushing, melting, and reworking of the sialic crust.
