Activation of ras Oncogenes During Colonic Carcinogenesis: Detection by the Polymerase Chain Reaction

Abstract

Oncogene activations are known to occur during the multiple step process of colonic carcinogenesis. However, no specific activation has been demonstrated that was relevant to colonic carcinogenesis until the detection of point mutations in total genomic DNA became feasible. The new developments in Molecular Biology permitted us to screen for point mutations of ras oncogenes, not only in solid tumor material but also in archeived histological slices and in DNA extracted from a single cell.
