Role of Cyclic AMP in the Secretory Process

Abstract

The three previous chapters have been devoted to an analysis of the role of calcium in the secretory mechanism, and in order not to obscure the picture which was developed a concerted attempt was made to avoid considering the role of another proposed mediator of the secretory process, adenosine cyclic 3´5´-monophosphate (cyclic AMP). This cyclic nucleotide was isolated by Rall et al. (1957) from liver homogenates in the late 1950s during an investigation into the hyperglycemic action of epinephrine. They observed in this cell-free system that cyclic AMP, like epinephrine, is capable of activating liver phosphorylase, and this finding led to the important discovery that the glycogenolytic effect of epinephrine is mediated by cyclic AMP.
