Haemophilus influenzae Type b

  • Chapter

Abstract

Invasive disease caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) is recognized as a leading infectious disease health problem, primarily for young children (Table 1). An estimated 20,000 persons develop invasive Hib disease each year in the United States, and it has also been estimated that during the first 5 years of life the cumulative incidence of disease is one episode in every 200 children.(84) Hib is the most important cause of bacterial meningitis in the United States; in addition, it causes a wide variety of other severe infections characterized by invasion of the bloodstream with involvement of organ systems other than the CNS. Despite the availability of effective antimicrobials, Hib remains a substantial cause of mortality and morbidity.
