Basic Programs for the Phasing of Flexion and Extension Movements of the Limbs during Locomotion

Neural Control of Locomotion

Part of the book series: Advances in Behavioral Biology ((ABBI,volume 18))

Abstract

Observations of movements about the hip joint and of the scapula upon the rib cage in normal and decerebrate cats stepping on a treadmill have expanded and supported earlier conclusions (Miller et al., 1975a, 1975b) that the coordination of the four limbs in alternate locomotion and in phase locomotion results from different combinations of basic programs for the phasing of flexion and extension movements of the homologous limbs (hindlimbs or forelimbs) and homolateral limbs (hind- and forelimb of the same side).
