Models of West European Urban Sprawl as an Active Defence Variable

  • Paul J. Bracken

Abstract

Present doctrines for mobile ground operations and material employment are based on open spaces that are shrinking rapidly, engulfed by development. In sprawling outward and converging together, European cities have become major obstacles to the free movement of armies. A great envelopment, like that laid out in the Schlieffen Plan would vainly search for an opening in the solid urban wall extending today through western FRG, the Benelux nations, and northern France.
