Properties of High Emulsifier Content O/W Microemulsions
We have been interested for some time in the use of microemulsions as solvents and media for the investigation of chemical reactions and interactions between oil and water soluble species(1). Recently, other investigators have reported reaction studies in both O/W(2) and W/O(3) microemulsions. As a complimentary and necessary component of this work, some knowledge of the physical chemical properties of the systems employed must be obtained. Such properties are obtained by means of thermodynamic (phase maps, effective pH, component activity), transport (conductance, diffusion) and structural (light scattering, ultracentrifugation, dielectric, NMR) measurements. This list is not meant to be inclusive, and a number of other techniques have been brought to bear on the problem, such as microscopy(4), neutron scattering(5), etc.
