Biofilm Reactors: A Reaction Engineering Approach to Modelling

Abstract

Biofilm reactors are often used in water and wastewater treatment and biochemical engineering. In particular, fluidised bed biological reactors (FBBR) have been developed since then high process intensification can be achieved (White 1981). In fact while in a conventional activated sludge tank the biomass concentration is 2–3 g/l, we can get in values of the order of 30–40 g/1, in a FBBR.
