A Progress Report on the Sokolov Tube Utilizing a Metal Fiber Faceplate

  • Robert C. Addison

Abstract

The conventional Sokolov tube utilizes a piezoelectric plate to convert the incident acoustic signal into an electric signal and also to serve as the interface between the vacuum chamber and the water. This paper describes experiments which use a metal fiber faceplate to serve as the interface between the vacuum chamber and the water. There are a number of advantages that result from this arrangement. The mechanical strength requirement that is imposed on the piezoelectric plate in a conventional Sokolov tube is eliminated and the size of the acousto-electric transducer can be increased in order to provide a large field of view. Furthermore, the type of acousto-electric transducer can be chosen to provide optimum image quality.
