The Propogation of Acoustic Waves

Abstract

The idea of imaging using acoustical energy is intriguing in itself aside from concern for its practical application. It may be compared to imaging in the infrared, ultraviolet, microwave or x-ray portions of the electromagnetic spectrum but using acoustical energy for imaging is quite different in the sense that it involves more than an extension of vision into the far reaches of the electromagnetic spectrum. In that sense, acoustical imaging has its own distinct characteristics and takes its place with electron optics as an extension of vision into non-electromagnetic realms. In the final stage, however, all forms of imaging must incorporate a step which returns to the realm of light to produce the final visual impression.
