Release of Drugs from IUDs Using an Ethylene Vinyl Acetate Matrix

Abstract

The work of the International Fertility Research Program (IFRP) in the clinical evaluation and development of contraceptive methods is aimed primarily at meeting the needs of the developing world. In many places where the contraceptive need is greatest, the IUD is the only reliable method acceptable to many of the women desiring protection. A reduction of the explosive population growth in these countries could result from an improvement in the acceptance of IUDs or from the introduction of effective alternatives to the IUD. Contraceptives whose design is based on the sustained release of drugs may provide the needed improvement. Specifically, the purpose of this paper is to encourage more research and use of the sustained release of drugs from inert polymers in which the connectivity of the drug particles within the matrix is the principal avenue for drug release.
