Cell Ageing: Chairman’s Introduction

It is particularly appropriate that this meeting of the ECBC Study Group on cell ageing should be held in Czechoslovakia, since the initial discussions which led to the formation of the group took place here at an earlier meeting organised by Dr. Holečkova in 1969. This was followed by a meeting in Norwich (U.K.) in 1972. A comparison of the programme of today’s meeting with those of the two earlier meetings is instructive in that it gives a guide to those areas in which progress has been made, and underlines those areas in which further effort may be profitable. The first meeting was concerned mainly with ageing in cell and tissue culture. The second attempted a broader survey of the whole field of cellular ageing. Today’s meeting attempts a synthesis since it considers--as you can see from the programme--cell behaviour in ageing, cell structure and function, effects of ageing on different cell types and the effects of ageing on disease processes. Perhaps the most obvious omission is that of a session primarily concerned with the molecular basis of ageing. It seems to me that the time has come for us to change the title of our group, to the ECBO Study Group on cell and molecular mechanisms of ageing. This is a topic which we must discuss when we consider the organisation of our next meeting in 1976.
