In the forms of beryl, aquamarine, and emerald minerals, beryllium compounds have been known as gemstones for thousands of years. After dissolving beryl in aqueous potassium hydroxide, Vauquelin in 1798 precipitated a new hydroxide by boiling the solution. In independent experiments by Wohler and Bussy in 1828, the metallic form was isolated by reducing the chloride with potassium in a platinum crucible. Wohler named the element beryllium, symbol Be, while Bussy used glucinium, Gl. Controversy over the name and symbol continued until 1957, when the name beryllium was recognized officially by the IUPAC.
