Abstract
Most hydrazides of fluorescent carboxylic acids are chemiluminescent on oxidation in basic media. Probably the best known hydrazide in this class of compounds is luminol (5-amino-2,3dihydro-1,4-phthalazinedione, I), and much of our early work on hydrazides was carried out with this compound Since the early work on the chemiluminescence of luminol and other cyclic hydrazides has been thoroughly reviewed,1 this article will cover only the more recent work.
