Simultaneous Measurement of Young’s Modulus and Shear Modulus at Low Temperatures
The thin-rod resonance technique for measuring elastic moduli has in the past been used in this laboratory  at high temperatures, and since it is desirable to make use of the same specimens for low-temperature measurements, the same technique was utilized in a cryostat. Since the times required for a sample to attain thermal equilibrium were longer at cryogenic temperatures and since problems involving dimensional stability and probe alignment were more easily solved than at higher temperatures, the system was ideally suited for automated data acquisition instrumentation.
