Optimal care of critically-ill patients during the crucial hours following open heart surgery requires experienced, well trained, and highly motivated registered nurses. The limited availability of nurses in our geographic area with these qualifications is the primary reason for our employing computer-based postoperative care techniques in the Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit of the University of Alabama Hospital, Birmingham, Alabama. We have automated many of the routine tasks in the CICU and by this means we are able to maintain the required high standard for quality of care despite constantly increasing patient loads and chronic CICU nursing staff shortages (5).
