Design Study of Liquid Oxygen Pumping Systems for Missile Fueling Incorporating Vented Storage Tanks

Abstract

The cryogenic pumping problems which are the concern of this paper are encountered in the fueling systems for relatively large missiles that use a cryogenic liquid oxidizer, particularly liquid oxygen. The problems arise from the necessity of accomplishing rapid transfer of large quantities of liquid oxygen with pumping systems which (1) must be relatively light in weight in order to minimize the initial cool-down time period, (2) must be very reliable, and (3) must place minimum requirements on the storage vessel from which the liquid oxygen is pumped.
