A Helium3 Refrigerator

Abstract

Temperatures in the neighborhood of 1.25°K are conveniently obtained by reducing the pressure on a liquid He4 bath in an appropriate dewar system. Below this temperature. the vapor pressure of the saturated liquid is so small that limitations on lowering the temperature are imposed by a rapid decrease in the pumping speed of the vacuum pumps. For He3 the vapor pressure for a given temperature is much larger than for He4 and will enable one to obtain temperatures in the neighborhood of 0.35°K.
