Temperature-Energized Static Seal for Liquid Hydrogen

Abstract

The concept of the “temperature-energized” static seal for cryogenic applications was introduced several years ago [1] and successfully employed in the liquid-oxygen lines of rocket propulsion systems. The application of liquid hydrogen in nuclear rocket propulsion prompted a recent test program to investigate performance of this seal in uninsulated piping internally cooled with liquid hydrogen and pressurized up to 1800 psi.
