Abstract

Expansion piston engines are widely used in producing liquid helium and in closed-cycle refrigerators for various other applications in the region of low temperatures. Most of these technical and research applications require reliable continuous operation for periods of weeks or months. For this reason an expansion engine with a minimum of moving parts and with complete gas lubrication of the piston within the cylinder has the best chance to overcome the difficulties inherent in present-day low-temperature refrigerators.
