Barrier Films for Filament-Wound Fiberglass Cryogenic Vessels

Due to the widespread search for an optimum rocket tank or aerospace pressure vessel, in the past decade, fiberglass, because of its high strength-to-weight ratio, has become an attractive material. The advent of quality filament winding techniques and increased fiber strength have improved the potential of the fiberglass structure even more. However, the difficulties which plagued filament-wound fiberglass in its early use are still with us today and in some instances have been aggravated by the increase in strength, e.g., high strains, joint design, brittleness, seals, etc.
