This paper describes the development of the insulation for the second and uppermost stage for the Saturn I space booster.In this program it was necessary to develop an insula-tion for this stage (the S-IV stage) that was capable of withstanding the thermal shock associated with loading of liquid hydrogen, could provide adequate insulative properties to limit the flow of heat into the liquid hydrogen, and still be of minimum weight.
