Some Considerations in the Design of a Superconducting Alternator
A consideration of the intended use of an electrical machine exerts the most important influence on the general design philosophy and the way in which the design develops. The superconducting alternator described in this paper was designed to investigate the application of superconductivity to the problem of constructing a low-weight, low-volume electromechanical power converter suitable for relatively large-scale aerospace power requirements. Such an alternator would be part of an integrated system incorporating its own closed-cycle refrigerator to maintain the superconducting elements below their critical temperature.
