A symposium devoted to hamsters as experimental animals was held in Dallas, Texas, May 31-June 2, 1977. In those early hamster days, when it came to Grant Winning, those of us who wished to work on this relatively late arrival from the wilds of Syria felt ourselves at some disadvantage. It was essential to make a strong case why we needed to work on hamsters rather than mice, because, as we were told so often by overzealous Site Visitors, “that has already been done in the mouse,” or “it would be much easier to do in the mouse.” Those who chose to work on rats have had similar problems with the “mouse lobby.”
