Compatibility of Atlas Materials with Fluorine Propellants

Abstract

In order to investigate upgrading of the ATLAS booster, the following oxidizers were investigated: fluorine (F2), oxygen difluoride (OF2), and FLOX (a mixture of liquid fluorine and oxygen). Each of these in conjunction with RP-1 has a specific impulse significantly greater than the present LOX/RP-1 system. One of the major problems in using fluorine-type oxidizers is that of material compatibility, and this paper describes a study of the compatibility of ATLAS materials with these oxidizers.
