Any sort of classification, including the one being examined in this paragraph, requires a definition of the classification indices of importance to the problem at hand. Since we are interested in developing probability models of echo signals, we should use the distortions to which emitted signals are subjected as they propagate in a water medium and when they reflect from objects of research as the main classification index. Thus, our examination reduces to studying the differences between forms of the echo signal and forms of the emitted signal.
