High pressures, produced in solids, liquids or gases, are now much used in physics and chemistry. Artificial diamonds [1] and borazon [2] (a cubic form of boron nitride, nearly as hard as diamond) are made at high pressures. Many chemical processes, e. g., the syntheses of methanol and ammonia, the polymerization of ethylene, etc. are also carried out at high pressures.
