The Hall Effect in Nearly-Free-Electron Metals

  • Chapter
The Hall Effect in Metals and Alloys

Part of the book series: The International Cryogenics Monograph Series ((INCMS))

Abstract

It is the aim of this chapter to provide a description of the behavior of the Hall effect in relatively simple metals, such that it will form a conceptual basis for the subjects of Chapters 4 and 5 where successively more difficult groups of metals are considered. The ultimate in simplicity from an electron transport point of view would be a free-electron metal, and some of the alkali metals are known to approximate very closely to this condition. But to obtain even a qualitative understanding of the Hall effect in a more typical metal it is preferable to start with that group of metals which are removed one degree in complexity from the model free-electron metal: the nearly-free-electron group.
