Remarks on Cosmic Strings, Aharonov-Bohm Effect and Vacuum Polarization

The idea that intergalactic space may be populated by topological defects frozen into the physical vacuum is one of the most exciting results of so called Grand Unified Theories. The defects may be of various kind: domain walls, strings, monopoles, textures. They come into life in the very early Universe during the symmetry-breaking phase transitions. None of them has been observed.
