Fundamental Concepts of Stress Analysis

Abstract

In this chapter we will show how to apply concepts of stress, static equilibrium, and free body diagrams for stress analysis of coplanar statically determinate structures. A coplanar structure is one in which all the members, loads, and reactions are in the same plane. A statically determinate structure is one that can be analyzed by applying only equations of static equilibrium, without resorting to analysis of bending or axial deformation. The concepts in this chapter are fundamental to all stress analysis work. They should be understood clearly by engineers who design load-carrying frames or members. The nomenclature used in this chapter is listed at the end of the chapter.
