Enzyme-Mimetic Polymers

Abstract

Enzymes are proteins with catalytic groups or proteins which bind or coordinate to small molecules with catalytic action. Enzymes bind substrate prior to reaction to condense and activate the substrate, and provide the bound substrate with suitable reaction field, resulting in an enhanced rate and specificity of reaction. The bound substrate is oriented toward an intramolecular catalytic group for high efficiency and specificity of reaction. Catalytic groups can increase catalytic ability by intramolecular cooperation. These aspects of enzyme catalysis can be reproduced to some extent by synthetic polymers and molecular aggregates. Among investigations on enzyme-mimetic polymers as such, reports published during 1978 and 1982 are reviewed in this article, and the reactivity of enzyme-mimetic polymers is discussed from a viewpoint of intramolecular reaction proceeding along a chain of multifunctional polymer molecules.
