Glycosphingolipids as Receptors

Abstract

A suggestion was offered a number of years ago that the glycosphingolipids may function as receptors for biological materials, and much of the early attention concerning this possibility was focused upon the gangliosides and the sulfatides, which are the glycosphingolipids possessing a charge at physiological pH. An attractive reason for attempting to assign roles as neurotransmitter receptors for these compounds is the high glycosphingolipid concentration in the nervous system.
